Kicking off EVVE 2024, this plenary will be abuzz with local leaders in the EV space.

We are honored to welcome Councillor Tony Mancini, Chair of the Environment & Sustainability Standing Committee for the Halifax Regional Municipality, to kick off our conference with an address focused on our theme, Electrifying Progress.

Councillor Mancini will provide an overview of the HalifACT plan’s role in steering the municipality towards a progressive electrification of transportation, exploring the distinction between substantive progress and staying with the process and will articulate how governmental support for clean energy transitions must transcend procedural advancements to address the complex challenges inherent in effective implementation.

Lia MacDonald, Vice President, Customer Experience and Innovation at Nova Scotia Power will present the utility’s current electric mobility initatives, as well as projects to come.

Professor Jeff Dahn, of the Jeff Dahn Research Group at Dalhousie University, will be delivering a keynote address covering the latest electric vehicle innovations and his industry-leading research.

The Al Cormier Award is named after Electric Mobility Canada’s founder, Al Cormier, who founded EMC in 2006, one of the first known organization focused on advancing electric mobility anywhere in the world.

EMC awards this national recognition annually to an individual who is or has been a champion in advancing the electrification of transportation. The 2024 recipient will receive the award at EVVE 2024.

Plug’n Drive and Electricity Canada will also be presenting the 2024 winners of the Canadian Electric Vehicle Awards Program, a joint initiative since 2014. Alyse Wilton, Manager of Environmental Health Programs at NB lung will discuss the devestating effects that ICE vehicles have on our respiratory systems. Alyse heads the Drive Electric Atlantic project that focuses on public education on electric vehicles, e-bikes, and electric school buses.
Dr. Laurette Geldenhuys from Canadian Physicians for the Environment will take the stage to discuss the health implications of GHG emissions.
We will then be joined by Abby Lefebvre, Community Engagement Officer of the Ecology Action Centre.

David Agosti

Director - Parking & Sustainable Mobility, Simon Fraser University
David Agosti is the Director of Parking and Sustainable Mobility at Simon Fraser University (SFU) and is responsible for everything commuter-related across all three SFU campuses. When looking at transportation, David analyzes consumer behaviour to better understand what motivates people to take different forms of transportation and what can be done to incentivize them to adopt more sustainable modes. Through incentivizing sustainable transportation methods, David’s department aims to help SFU achieve its 2025 Sustainability goal by reducing Scope 3 emissions from commuting by 25%. During David’s decade-plus tenure at SFU, he has seen transportation at Universities shift from parking-focused departments to a more holistic viewpoint that takes into account the economic, environmental, and sociocultural impacts of our collective transportation choices. David is currently focusing on the intersection of data & technology, consumer behavior, and sustainability in the transportation field in such areas as: electrification, micro-mobility, mode-shift, and connectivity. During his spare time, David unplugs from technology and enjoys hikes into the backcountry of British Columbia to experience the natural wonder of our province.

Chief Legal & Public Affairs Officer, FLO
Travis J. Allan is the Vice-President, Public Affairs and General Counsel at FLO, one of North America's leading electric vehicle charging networks and manufacturer of charging solutions. Travis works with and advises numerous governments across North America on electric vehicle (EV) and climate policy matters. He is the Chair of Electric Mobility Canada's National Government Relations Committee and a member of the executive committee, a member of the Editorial Advisory Board of Electric Autonomy, Chair of the Board at Project Neutral and he has been selected as one of Canada's leading energy lawyers by Who's Who Legal. He serves as a contributing editor at the International Energy Law Review (published by Sweet & Maxwell) and has previously served as adjunct faculty at the University of Toronto Faculty of Law.

Elly is responsible for driving the port forward with its ambitious sustainability goals. as they work towards being net zero by 2030, and emissions free by 2050. Elly has a passion for the environment and is a second year student with The Open University, where she is working towards a degree in Environmental Science. Elly supports the port by identifying, developing and delivering projects to help them on their journey to decarbonisation, which range from shore power provision through to renewable energy generation. Most recently, Elly successfully led a bid for £19.8m of funding from the UK government’s Zero Emissions Vessels and Infrastructure competition (ZEVI). The project, called Sea Change, will design, build and operate a ‘shore power’ system across the three busiest berths at Portsmouth International Port. Mohamed Zaki is an Assistant Professor at Western University. Dr. Zaki leads the EMRC Lab, which conducts research in smart mobility focusing on autonomous, sustainable, and safe mobility.
 

Eddy Zuppel

Program Leader, Clean & Energy Efficient Transportation, National Research Council Canada
Eddy Zuppel is currently the Program Leader of the Clean & Energy Efficient Transportation program. As Program Leader, he manages research and development activities aimed at assisting industry and policy development in the low carbon mobility sector. Specifically, he oversees over 50 projects in the areas of aerodynamics, alternative fuel applications, batteries, electrical machines, fleet energy efficiency, and hydrogen applications. He joined the NRC in 2015 as a senior project manager following eleven years in the aerospace industry where he held different managerial positions, including Section Chief of a multidisciplinary team of 20 engineers which supported the development of special mission aircraft. He holds a Bachelor’s and a Master’s in Mechanical Engineering from McGill University and has co-authored eight scientific publications.
